The first part of Post Truth countering misinformation narratives focuses on transdisciplinary research on the topic post truth, this process designed and conducted by Seila Fernández Arconada offered a ground for understanding the topic, opening up conversation but also allowing participants to “get lost” in a vast complex phenomenon as the post truth era is.
From local to global, from reality to imagination, from personal stories to global media stories, the growing problem of post truth with the fake news and social manipulation started to become more tangible for participants creating more questions to enrich the process. This ground of individual realities and transdisciplinary views was the first step on creating a common ground that was key in order to create a meaningful and deep reflective ground for collaborative creation. Meanwhile, participants are living together with the team in the project space Patria (Skrzetuszwo, Poland), which allows closer connections, getting to know each other from personal to professional interests. During the artist’s hub each participant artist introduce their art practices to the rest, as an ongoing process to learn from each other.

We began gathering ideas collectively. The main focus was to respond to the topic of the project and all the encounters but also to the space Вежа (tower), where we began creating a dialogue with from conceptual approaches for possible "artistic gestures'.
This initiation of the process has to take in account a number of limitations and the most important is time. The challenge created for the participants was embraced and taken into action to put in practice the learning from previous days, challenging each other ideas from collective discussions. During this morning together in the Dnipro river bank Seila invited the participants to generate some artistic gestures to engage on a dialogue with the Dnipro river.
Seila apart from being the curator and trainer of this project she is primarily an artist researcher whose practice is based on contemporary eco-social uncertainties, product of the tensions arising from extractive relationships with Nature. She has explored rivers and bodies of water for a number of years, including the Amazon river and in this case, she offered the space for dialogue with the Dnipro river. Dnipro river is a very important river from being a body of water, but also a border, a very important space on geopolitics and history as well as a symbol for Ukrainian identity which currently under thread and danger in various part of the country due to the Russian aggression on the country. From this invitation a number of collective "artistic experiments" were initiated by participant artists as well as the facilitator of this program, Seila, invited the participants to read a selection of sentences collected from Ukrainian literature where the Dnipro river was named. Then the artist Vartan Markarian iniciated the process of creating a line of stones collectively. Roksolana Durka iniciated the performative intervention of creating a boat where feelings were contained. Together with Mikhail Ray we introduced salt in the boat and launched it as a form of dialogue. In addition, Fedir Khorkov invited everyone to join on the action of drawing with Dnipro water. This space included birds around who visited the actions happening. This summary of the day gives some glimpses of what it was, out of this collective experience we created a video installation presented in the final presentation of the project. PROGRAM 2 The program continues with the focus on the relationship between Art and artistic processes in connection to post truth, giving the opportunity to travel to another cultures, practices and perceptions. This day we had the real honour to have international virtual speakers including Alessandro Rolandi, multimedia and performance artist, social activist, researcher, writer and educator. His work "focuses on social intervention and relational dynamics to expand the notion of art practice beyond existing structures, spaces and hierarchies, engaging with reality through strategic decentralized autonomous practices". Alessandro has been based in China until 2020, he is the founder and director of the Social Sensibility R&D Department at Bernard Controls Industries in Beijing (2010-ongoing) and Paris/Gonesse (2016-ongoing) and a founding partner of the Social Sensibility Research Institute (SoSense). More information about his work: https://www.alessandrorolandi.org/ We also had the opportunity to listen to Txaro Arrazola, artist and professor at the University of the Basque Country, who gave us a more in depth perspective of academic research on the topic of post truth. Here some information about her practice: https://www.txaro-arrazola.com/ In addition, we had another perspective on the topic from Bernard Fairhurst, artist and psychologist. He gave us more insights on the perception on truth including concepts such as delusion, paredolia, among others. Also he focused on how photography, perceived as truth is actually a format that include only two dimensions of reality which is far from being true.
This project is a collective hub of knowledge, therefore they had the opportunity to share in depth their practices. This space became important to know more about each other, focusing on the differences and similarities of their practices, regarding research, concepts, methods, techniques... this space was the beginning to tackle common spaces and possible ways on how to approach possible collaborations.
"A work of Art was the result of a unique and irreplaceable experience, containing a revelation obtained through individual effort and artistic genius, and endowed with a meaning peculiar only to it" Mykhailo Koltsov Today we began with the Post Truth collective journey, a "hybrid experimental program" designed by Seila, where participants will get immersed in the topic of Post Truth from different perspectives, learning from local and international researchers as well as from an experiential and experimental collective approach.
This first day we began from the introduction of the topic "post truth' to spark some questions as well as focusing on ethical principles for our "temporary community" from where to reflect and create together. We were very grateful to have two special visitor speakers. Mykhailo Koltsov, Ukrainian philosopher, who gave a talk about a philosophical perspective of Art in the post truth reality. Also, the artist and psychologist Bogdan Bondarchuk who presented an experimental video talk exploring the psychological reflection on the nature of truth. Discussions began, sparking more questions and ideas, unravelling the complexities of how post truth era is present in the contemporary societies across borders and cultures. We are very pleased to announce the selected participants for the Ukraine edition of Post Truth project: Roksolana Dudka Vartan Markarian Karina Synytsia Fedir Khorkov Bohdana Zaitats Mikhail Ray Gennadiy Chernega Ana Kravchenko We look forward to this immersive experience sharing this whole week together. We aim to focus on the group commitment and enthusiasm for this opportunity.
However, we are aware of the possible uncertainties and risks due to the Russian full scale invasion in Ukraine which we aim to take in account. Our main priority is to provide a safe space for collective reflection and creation. |
